| Description of works | 【The appearance depends on your wishes】 This is a lovely pair of komainu with comparatively large heads, short limbs, and broad eyebrows. They are unique in the sense that one has the features of a male and the other of a female. In the Edo period and afterwards, ceramic komainu came in a variety of appearances because they were custom-made to express the dedicators’ wishes. This pair, atypical of the standard pairing of a shishi (guardian lion) and komainu (lion-dog) and having gender features, is assumed to have been made with the hope of a good marriage relationship. |
