| Description of works | 【Komainu that became a fox at a dedicator’s wish】 In the Edo period, ceramic komainu took on various appearances, reflective of the wishes of the individuals who dedicated them to the shrines, and freeing them from the standardized design. In some cases, kilns which were inexperienced produced komainu that showed that lack of technical know-how. Even taking into account the diversity of styles which existed in the Edo period, this particular komainu is quite unusual, as it looks exactly like a fox. Its fluffy tail suggests that the creator was very particular about its appearance. An inscription on its body indicates that it was made in present-day Ena City, Gifu Prefecture. |
