Description of works【Innovator of American contemporary ceramics】
The ceramist Peter Voulkos aspired to be a painter when he was young, but later switched to pottery-making while he was studying at Montana State College. Voulkos’ level of precision in wheel throwing was so high that he was described as “an artist who could throw a handsome pot and read a newspaper at the same time.” In 1953, while teaching at Black Mountain College, Voulkos met innovative artists such as Josef Albers, and later mingled with abstract expressionist artists in New York. This drastically steered the course of his artistic journey towards the creation of clay objects exhibiting the soul of abstract expressionism. Although his works had the shapes of jars and plates, he boldly pounded, tore, and perforated them, rejecting the traditional concept of ceramics having “practical usage,” and expanded the horizons of American sculptural shaping of clays.
