Description of worksThe Finnish ceramic artist Birger Kaipiainen began his career at the Art Department of Arabia (a Finnish ceramics company) in 1937, after graduating from the School of Arts and Crafts in Helsinki. He was awarded the Grand Prix at the 1960 Milan Triennale for his metal-framed, bird-shaped objects “Kuovi” (curlews) decorated with ceramic beads, which helped him become one of the iconic ceramists of Finland. Kaipiainen's works are characterized by vivid-colored flowers, birds, and other imaginative motifs, as displayed on this piece. Arabia’s famous Paratiisi series, very popular in Japan, was based on the large plates designed by Kaipiainen. Paratiisi is still a globally-cherished, long-selling ceramic series.
