Description of works【Jars — the most representative shape of Yayoi pottery】
Jars have been and still are one of the most popular shapes in ceramics, although very few are attributed to the Jomon period as it was a hunter/fisher-gatherer society. However, when the transition to a farming society occurred in the Yayoi period, jars became necessary for the storage of grains.
Compared to Jomon pottery, Yayoi pottery is much simpler in shape, and decorated mainly with straight lines and wavy patterns, such as those found on the neck and shoulders of this work. Both Jomon and Yayoi pottery were baked by being placed next to bonfires. The parts of the pottery in contact with burning rice straw and other fuels trapped the soot (carbon) and turned black, as in the left half of this jar.
