Description of works【Great harmony of an ivory base and shallow-relief carving】
SEIFU Yohei was a ceramist active in Kyoto in the early part of the Taisho era. In 1893, he became the first ceramist to be appointed Teishitsu Gigei-in (Imperial Household Artist). The glazed body of this vase in warm ivory reflects the light softly, as if it wears a veil. Compared to other white porcelain displayed around this piece, the tone is distinctively different. The vase bears symmetrical kikukarakusa (chrysanthemum arabesque) patterns in the center, accompanied by relief carvings of zuicho (birds of luck) with jocular facial expressions on both sides. SEIFU’s white porcelain beautifully achieved a harmonious combination of soft tone and relief carving.
