| Description of works | 【Despite its small number of production sites, the Mino Sue Kilns products had a big presence】 The Mino Sue Kilns, located in the area stretching from Kakamigahara City to Gifu City, began producing sue ware (stoneware) in the sixth century CE, and expanded its production in the latter half of the seventh and eighth centuries. Ancient sue ware made by the Mino Sue Kilns were distributed to Mie, Heijokyo (ancient Nara), and other regions quite distant from the Kilns. Production volume of the Kilns in medieval times was not so large, making mostly household ceramics such as bowls to be shipped to neighboring areas, but up-scale ceramics modeled after Chinese porcelain were also in their portfolio. This wide-mouthed pitcher is one such luxurious item. It is in the shape of a teapot with rings to attach a handle — a style that was still rare in the 13th century CE. |
