Description of works【Sake vessel modeled after urushi lacquerware using the two most widely-used glazes】
This work is in the shape called heishi, a narrow-mouthed and broad-shouldered vessel. It was a representative shape of koseto (old Seto ware) and was produced for about 300 years. In the period between the end of the 12th century and the first half of the 14th century CE, the heishi shape was modeled after the Chinese porcelain vases called meiping (“plum vase” in Chinese), like the two works displayed on the left. However, this piece represents a new heishi that emerged in the latter half of the 14th century CE, modeled after Negoronuri lacquerware.
Koseto is coated with kaiyu (ash glaze) or tetsuyu (iron glaze), and most of them have one of the two applied. However, there are works, such as this one, which is coated with kaiyu, then has tetsuyu applied over it, using a technique called nagashigake (dripping glaze).
