Description of worksThis teapot was made by YAMADA Jozan III who, in 1998, became the first ceramist to be designated a “Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage” in the category of Tokoname teapots. During the Meiji era, a teapot-making technique of China’s Yixing Kiln was introduced to Tokoname, which made Tokoname the representative producer of teapots in Japan. Jozan III produced a variety of teapots — from very traditional ones to those in his original forms. They were not only beautifully shaped, but also highly practical, made possible through his sophisticated techniques used in all aspects of pottery-making — from clay preparation, shaping on a potter’s wheel, to firing. The teapots’ base material, shudei, is made of red, fine-grained clay. These teapots are fired unglazed, resulting in a bright red color due to the rich iron oxide contained in the clay.
