Description of worksIn 1930, ARAKAWA Toyozo discovered the fragments of Shino tea bowls at the old kilns of Mutabora in Ogaya, Kukuri, Kani City, Gifu Prefecture. Based on that finding, he proved that Shino and Setoguro (black Seto ware) of the Momoyama period were mostly produced in Mino, and not Seto as previously believed. After that, he devoted himself to reproducing ceramics of the Momoyama period. The black surface of Setoguro is achieved by firing it after coating it with iron glaze, taking it out from the kiln around the time the glaze is molten, and cooling it immediately. Because of this procedure, Setoguro is also known as “hikidashi-guro” (black ware pulled out [hikidashi] of the kiln).
This piece does not have any vertical herame (spatula marks), but has the bottom section scraped off to round the hip slightly, and has other features distinctive of ARAKAWA’s works that are not found in Setoguro made during the Momoyama period.
