In the Khorasan region in northeastern Iran and the Transoxiana region in Central Asia during the 9th through 11th centuries CE, local potters made pottery with a red base coated with white slip on which polychrome patterns were painted using a variety of pigments and glazes.
This piece bears a fun design of birds and heart shapes on a yellow-glazed background, and is known as one of the finest Iranian polychrome ceramics in Japan.
