Description of works【Vietnamese dragon-motif jar with inscription wishing for peace】
At the end of the 14th century, potters in Northern Vietnam began producing underglaze cobalt blue ware that emulates Jingdezhen ware. This jar is made by applying white slip over a gray base and painting it with a pale cobalt pigment. On the neck we find an inscription reading “Tenka-taihei” (peace reigns over the world), there are patterns of lotus and other flowers on its shoulder, a dragon encircles the body, and a Lama-style lotus petal pattern is on the bottom. This jar is believed to have been made for royalty and nobility.
