Description of works【Sukhothai means “the dawn of happiness”】
This dish bears a design of comical fish with water grass in its mouth. Four me-ato (spur marks, or kiln support marks) remain in the center, indicating that this dish was stacked together with other dishes during firing. The potters at the Sukhothai Kilns who made this dish mainly produced pottery with a dark gray base that was coated with white slip, and painted with a simple pattern in tetsu-e (a paint technique that uses iron oxide-based pigment). The freedom found in the bold paintings suited the aesthetic taste of the Japanese people, and therefore Sukhothai ware were much favored in Japan.
