Description of works【Bird of Khmer】
This jar is in a stylized form of an owl or other bird of prey, with a tower-shaped lid having a pointed top. It is a container for slaked lime used for chewing betel, a vining plant belonging to the pepper family. Its leaves are used for wrapping areca nuts with slaked lime, to be chewed together for refreshing effects — a practice called “betel chewing” that is widely popular in Southeast Asia.
