Description of works【A closer look reveals a fashionable surface that influenced Japanese pottery】
This type of pottery is called toshitsu-doki, which refers to kiln-fired, unglazed pottery that is harder than earthenware. Because it is impervious, it is suitable for storing liquids for a long time. This technique has had a significant influence on Japanese sue ware (stoneware).
As exemplified by this work, cord marks are present on the surface, resulting from the body being pounded with a wooden plate wrapped with ropes at the final stage of forming. Creating these continuous horizontal lines was a decorative technique which became popular in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula at that time.
