Description of works【Flowers and birds painted vividly on porcelain】
In the final phase of the Ming dynasty (17th C. CE), production of gosai (five-color glazed ware [wucai in Chinese) slowed down in the midst of political unrest. However, it resurged during the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing dynasty and has continued to be popular. This dish exemplifies the Kangxi wucai style. With two birds on the tree branch in the center, rocks, grasses, flowers, and insects lured by the flowers are picturesquely arranged around them. The rim is decorated with brown glaze in a style called “kuchibeni” (iron glazed rim).
