Description of works【Dish with flamboyant yet rustic flower and bird design】
In Japan, the somewhat roughly-made gosai (five-color glazed ware [wucai in Chinese]) and seikajiki (underglaze cobalt blue porcelain) imported from China in the period between the Momoyama and early Edo periods (16th C. CE–17th C. CE) were generally called gosude (Swatow ware). This dish is a type called “gosu-akae” on which overglaze enameling in red, blue, green, and black is applied. Birds, butterflies, peonies, and chrysanthemums are painted in the central section, with a pair of dragons on either side. “Gosu-akae” has always been one of the most popular designs of Chinese ceramics in Japan.
