Description of works【Could this be a bowl for the afterlife?】
Stamped with floral patterns, this small bowl is coated with green, white, and brown glazes. Called tosansai (three-color glazed ware of the Tang dynasty), these bowls were fired at a relatively low temperature, resulting in fragile pottery to which multiple glazes were applied. Many of them were not intended for practical use — the potters focused more on artistry and beauty — and the bowls were mass-produced to be placed in the tombs of aristocrats. A bowl almost identical to this was brought to Japan at about the same time that these works were being produced in China, and was used as a lid for a jar, as revealed by an archaeological dig at Naohai-ji Temple in Mie Prefecture.
