Description of works【Dishes with different designs for enjoying kaiseki】
These three-legged dishes, made in molds, were for kaiseki (a traditional multi-course Japanese meal) provided at a tea ceremony. Their production was ordered by a Japanese client from a privately-operated kiln in Jingdezhen, China. Three are formed in the shapes of a cow, a lion, and a rooster, and the two in the shapes of a leaf and a biwa (Japanese lute) have landscape scenes painted on their interiors. These free-style paintings express the unpretentious fun of the common people. This type of dish was called kosometsuke (underglaze blue porcelain made in China) and they were much favored by Japanese tea masters. The pinholes on the rims, called “worm-eaten marks,” were one of the features they appreciated.
