Description of works【Codes hidden in the pattern】
These cups were made using a technique called 豆彩 tosai (Chinese: doucai), in which the outlines of the design were painted on the base in underglaze blue, then coated with translucent glaze for firing. The spaces inside the outlines were then painted in overglaze enamels of different colors, and the piece was fired repeatedly for each set of colors. Because the colors were so vivid that they appear to compete with each other, the technique was also called 闘彩 tosai, with the Chinese character 闘 meaning “to fight.” Some alphabet characters of the Manchu people, who founded the Qing dynasty, are hidden within the pattern.
