Description of works【Ceramics used for tea ceremony that became popular in Japan】
This bowl is shaped in the form of narrow lotus petals carved in relief with a flowing feel. This bowl belongs to a family of ceramics called kinuta seiji (kinuta celadon) that was cherished widely in Japan. A variety of theories exist as to why it is called “kinuta.” One is that a masterpiece belonging to this family, possibly a long-necked vase, resembled a kinuta hammer used for beating fabric for softening purposes. Another theory is that the tea master SEN no Rikyu called his celadon “kinuta” because the sound it made when it cracked resembled that made by kinuta.
