Description of works【Is this a wine decanter?】
This plump ewer with its wide mouth has a short, chamfered spout and applied grape cluster decorations under the knobs on both sides of the ewer with brown glaze over them all. Grape-growing and winemaking in China are said to have begun when Zhang Jian, who was sent to the Western Regions by the order of Emperor Wu, discovered and brought back grapes during the former Han dynasty (3 C. BCE - 1 C. CE).
