| Description of works | 【Wild duck loved by tea masters】 This is a kogo (incense box) in the shape of a wild duck with its lid coated with oyu (yellow glaze). The lower half is glazed with ryokuyu (green glaze), so that different colors of glaze are used for the part of the duck which remains above the water and for the part that is submerged. These lovely wild duck kogo were cherished by tea masters. They were even included in a ranking list of katamono kogo (molded incense boxes/incense boxes with related designs) published in the Edo period. This box is a type of pottery called kochi, in which green, yellow, aubergine, brown, and other colors of lead-based glazes are applied to bisque-fired porcelain and re-fired at low temperatures. In China, they were called “susancai” (Japanese: “sosansai”). |
