Description of works【The stark contrast of black and gray】
The meiping (“plum vase” in Chinese) is a vessel with slightly bulging shoulders and a body tapered toward the bottom. This vase features a sharp-edged motif in contrasting colors, made by sgrafitto (in this case, scraping off portions of the black glaze before it dries on the gray base), and then firing the piece. A peony is depicted with a bold touch as a mado-e (a picture framed in a window) in the shape known as mokko-gata (four lobed shape). Seigaiha (wave pattern) surrounding the window are in sembori-monyo (carved line pattern), giving impressive nuances to the vase.
