Description of works【Delicate lines ― are they hare's fur or rice straw?】
Tea bowls produced by the Jian Kiln in Jiangnan, China, were called “san” (Chinese: “zhan”) and were cherished in Japan as temmoku tea bowls. They were named after Mt. Temmoku (Tianmushan) in China, which had a Zen temple, and a Japanese monk who studied there brought back this bowl. This type of bowl is called togosan (Chinese: “tuhaozhan” [hare’s fur tea bowl]) in China, because the fine lines covering it resemble hare’s fur. In Japan, these bowls are also called “nogime (rice straw) temmoku,” because people viewed the lines as nogi (rice straw).
