Description of works【Large jar which adorned the rooms of European aristocracy】
This beautiful jar is decorated with peonies, combined with waterside scenery, with an addition of straight lines and curves filling the space around them. Auspicious motifs, such as plums and clouds, are scattered here and there. The lid and the jar’s mouth are edged with decorative copper fukurin (ornamental rim). This was a standard design for large jars exported to Europe during the late Ming dynasty (around the 16th C. CE-17th C. CE). A similar jar was salvaged from the Spanish merchant vessel San Diego, which sank off the coast of the Philippines in 1600.
