Description of works【Incense burner with short animal feet】
A fuku or sansokuro is a squat, wide-mouthed, three-footed incense burner. Made on a potter’s wheel, they feature the molded feet of an animal. To achieve this flamboyant petal-like pattern on the indigo background, a technique called rohajiki (wax resist) is used in which portions of the body are first coated with wax, and then indigo and brown glazes are applied. In this way, the waxed sections remain uncolored (i.e., white) and only the glazed sections are colored.
