Description of worksJohnson Brothers was a pottery manufacturer founded by two brothers — Frederick and Alfred Johnson — in Stoke on Trent, U.K., in 1883. Initially, they made simple underglaze blue porcelain products, but later developed very popular semi-porcelain tableware with designs transferred from engraved copper plates. In 1968, Johnson Brothers became part of Wedgwood due to financial difficulties, and after Wedgwood was acquired by Finland’s Fiskars in 2015, the brand name “Johnson Brothers” was discontinued. These plates are part of the Johnson Brothers’ popular series “The Friendly Village” (made between 1953–2003). They bear nostalgic American scenes in different seasons that were transferred from copper plates using soft green, red, and black inks. Middle-class North Americans were the major clients for this type of transfer-printed tableware.
