Description of works【Veneration of Chinese ceramics】
Some of ryokuyu-toki (green-glazed ware) and kaiyu-toki (ash-glazed ware) produced by the Sanage Kilns were reproductions of metal vessels, which were traded as high-end products, or of ceramics imported from China. This tetsuki-hei (handled bottle) was modeled after celadon ware made by the Yuezhou Kilns in Zhejiang Province, China.
Its features include a graceful form and flattened handle, and a generally warm tone achieved by pale yellow-green ash glaze on condensed grayish white surface. Green-glazed and ash-glazed handled bottles made by the Sanage Kilns have been excavated mainly at Heiankyo (ancient Kyoto), but also in other parts of the country, and are believed to have been used for rice wine and other luxurious liquids.
