Description of works【Iconic, black earthenware with smoothly-polished sections from the final Jomon period】
Jomon pottery underwent a series of stylistic changes in both form and decoration over its history, which spanned more than 13,000 years. In the final Jomon period, which began about 1000 BCE, an early form of farming was taking place in the Kyushu region, heralding the arrival of the subsequent Yayoi culture. In this last phase of the Jomon culture, splendid earthenware representative of this subperiod emerged in the Tohoku region.
This vessel epitomizes the earthenware of the end of Jomon, made by carbon trapping (blackening of the surface by trapping soot during firing) and meticulous polishing. These vessels were used at special events, such as festivals and ceremonies.
