| Description of works | 【Beautiful urinal decorated with comforting blue flowers】 This urinal is superbly embellished with peonies, chrysanthemums, golden laces, and other flowers that bloom in the fall. After the Great Nobi Earthquake occurred in 1891 in Gifu and Aichi prefectures, ceramic urinals became very popular as replacements for wooden versions, and Seto in Aichi Prefecture became one of the prominent producers. KATO Mon-emon VI was the owner of a ceramic manufacturer that offered a variety of ceramic products including tableware, sanitary ware, and luxury porcelain mainly for export. This manufacturer is known for launching Japan’s first Japanese-style ceramic flush toilets and Western-style urinals in 1893. Luxurious urinals, such as this piece, were installed at fancy restaurants, hotels, and the residences of wealthy people. |
