Description of works【Roses in Nagoya-style painting perfected with one flat brush】
The Nagoya Branch of Shofu Toki was established in 1906, as the ceramics painting department of a Kyoto-based manufacturer of ceramics and porcelains for export, and was owned by SHOFU Kajo. This was around the time the ceramics production in Nagoya was growing. Accommodating the requests of foreign buyers, this Branch sourced many base products from Seto or Mino, and painted them with overglaze enamels. It was one of the prominent providers of export ceramics and porcelains in Nagoya until the 1970s. This work is filled with patterns using paints of gold and other colors, which is typical of Nagoya-style painted ware. Because the painters had to finish each piece very quickly, they used a single flat brush to complete the work. Roses were a popular motif for the products exported to North America.
