Description of works【Black tea bowl shimmering in blue】
This tea bowl was created by NONOMURA Ninsei, who launched the Omuro Kiln in front of the Ninna-ji Temple in Kyoto in the mid-17th century CE, and made his name creating gorgeous polychrome ceramics. On the underside of the foot, there is a small signature stamp reading “Ninsei.”
This thin-walled tea bowl has a narrow waist and gently opens up as it ascends toward the rim. On the underside, the foot was carved out with a design of blooming chrysanthemum using spatulas. This and other features of this bowl contribute to reducing the weight to a surprising lightness.
A band with gold and silver diamond patterns on a white background runs across the middle, with the rest coated in black glaze with a blue shimmer. Although the overall atmosphere is quiet, sophisticated aesthetics are felt in this lustrous bowl.
