Description of works【Painting on a white porcelain “canvas”】
This impressive work is a large dish bearing a design that looks almost like a painting, with the motifs rendered in underglaze blue.
It is formed as a deep thin-walled bowl with a large foot. Using different shades of blue on a white background, an anchored ship and fishing nets being dried are painted in a bold manner on the interior, surrounded by mado-e (picture windows).
This dish, exhibiting scenery infused with a rich atmosphere, shows how greatly blue and white porcelain from Chinese kilns was venerated by Japanese ceramists.
