Description of works【A work of a high-brow painter of Seto, “The City of Ceramics”】
A shallow upper box and a deeper lower box, neatly formed with very little distortion, are combined as a jubako (tiered food box).
They are decorated with a design of orchids, chrysanthemums, plums, and bamboo — a pattern called shikunshi (four great persons) — based on a Chinese painting in which each person is represented by a plant reflecting the noble character of each. The box also has inscriptions of Chinese poems associated with each plant. The lid, which features a pinecone-shaped knob, also bears the shikunshi design. This is a classic piece reflecting the literati culture that was popular in the late Edo period.
