| Description of works | 【Uniquely shaped sue ware (stoneware) of the Sanage Kilns spread eastward】 From the time of their founding in the first half of the fifth century CE, the Sanage Kilns steadily increased their production of sue ware (stoneware). Owing to the potters’ meticulous finishing and the sturdiness of the fired products, the Kilns’ sue ware was deemed to be of high quality and was used in many regions outside Aichi Prefecture. Excavated sue ware demonstrates that it was already spreading outside Aichi Prefecture by the fifth century CE and had reached the Kanto region by the sixth to seventh centuries CE. This piece is said to have been excavated from a tomb in Gumma Prefecture. With its rounded bottom, the shape resembles a flask used for experiments in a science class, and was a popular shape of the seventh century Sanage Kiln. |
