Description of works【Since the Kofun (Tumulus) period, chickens have always been valuable】
This piece is a haniwa (terracotta funerary object), which were arranged in rows at tombs. A variety of shapes exist, including animals and people, cylinders, houses, weapons, and other man-made objects. This work is an animal haniwa — a chicken with a vermillion-painted comb. In the bird family, there were also waterfowl haniwa.
Haniwa in the shape of wild boars and horses also existed, presumably representing animals familiar to the people of that time and suggesting what life was like during the Kofun period.
