Description of works【Forms of Korean jars vary from state to state, but this footed jar is iconic to Silla】
This piece is toshitsu-doki (kiln-fired, unglazed pottery that is harder than earthenware) made in Silla. Each state on the ancient Korean Peninsula had a unique local jar, and footed jars were a specialty of Silla. The body and the foot of Silla jars are unified as one piece, but those made in Gaya, a kingdom that thrived in the Three Kingdoms period, were separable, and the jars were placed on stands.
This jar has square-shaped open work on its foot — a feature also found on the legs and feet of many Japanese sue ware (stoneware), which has its roots in the toshitsu-doki of the Korean Peninsula.
