Description of worksHyochien was a painting studio founded in 1873 in Fukagawa City, Tokyo (present-day Koto City, Tokyo) to produce porcelain products for export. It was established by KAWAHARA Noritatsu who served as the commissioner of the Hakurankai Jimukyoku Fuzoku Seitosho (ceramics studio under the World’s Fair Office) launched by the Japanese government to produce porcelain products for exhibit at the 1873 Vienna World's Fair. This government studio’s porcelain featured exquisite Japanese-style painting, and they earned high acclaim at various World Fairs. This studio moved to Nagoya in 1884 to produce products exclusively for Morimura Gumi, a ceramics trading company. The ultramarine-glazed body of this vase bears a design painted using gold overglaze alone, and reflects the sophisticated style achieved by Hyochien. An inscription on the underside indicates that it was made for a World’s Fair and the painting was applied by IZUMI Umeichi, a renowned painter.
