Description of works NAGAE Shigekazu is one of the globally-known leaders in ceramic casting. Generally, ceramic casting is used for mass-producing objects, such as tableware. It is therefore considered a failure if warping occurs during firing. NAGAE, however, decided to take warping as one of the porcelain attributes and incorporated it into his shaping, in order to expand the creative horizons of ceramic casting.
This work was first cast as a triangle, a bottomless box with tapering sides — looking much like a wide band — and “entwined” with another piece of the same shape. They were then hung inside the kiln using a bar-like kiln accessory and fired, allowing them to warp in a controlled way to achieve unique, limber shapes.
