Description of worksAt the beginning of her career as a ceramist, YOKOTA Noriko struggled to prevent the slight warping that inevitably occurred no matter how precisely she shaped her cylindrical, conical, spherical, and other geometric works. In one of her attempts, however, she realized that she had been restraining the clay’s nature when shaping her works, and decided to launch a new series “Tsuchi Bito” (Clay-Man Collaborations) around 2008.
This piece was made through a process of capturing the clay’s reactions, or its “will,” to her action — sometimes accepting it and other times rejecting it. It is a way for the clay and the potter to collaborate sometimes and confront each other at other times, which is only achievable through an almost-equal relationship between the two parties, and it represents YOKOTA’s distinctive perspectives on how clay is related to humans.
