| Description of works | A Seto native, KURIKI Tatsusuke, studied under the prominent ceramists TOMIMOTO Kenkichi, KONDO Yuzo, and FUJIMOTO Yoshimichi at Kyoto City University of Arts. After graduating from that school, he became a widely-acclaimed ceramist and won many awards at various exhibitions, starting with the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and including the Chunichi International Exhibition of Ceramic Arts and the Japan Fine Arts Exhibitions (Nitten). As exemplified in this work, KURIKI challenged the constraints ceramics have in their production process, such as shrinkage and warping, while recognizing them as inevitabilities. His thoughts on shaping, in terms of forms and ornamentations, were embodied in his attempts — all at extremely sophisticated levels. |
