Description of works【A priest who was actually a raccoon】
In Japan, raccoons have always been portrayed as mysterious animals that transform into something else, fool people, and pound their bellies on moon-lit nights. Of all the raccoon-related stories, the one in which the animal turns into a priest had been told in many places, and in the mid-Edo period and afterwards, the story became a favorite subject for paintings and crafts. This raccoon-shaped hand warmer was potted with the hands, deliberately leaving finger prints to accentuate the raccoon’s plumpness. The artist, HIRASAWA Kuro, is also known as a former clansman of the Owari Domain and a tea master who made, in his retirement, charming ceramic works achievable only by non-professionals like himself.
