Description of works【Dish bearing one-and-only design】
The Nabeshima Kiln was founded in the early Edo period, and directly operated by the Nabeshima Domain for producing special tableware dedicated for the shogunate, feudal lords, and aristocrats. This dish, first decorated with soshi (Japanese thread-bound books) in underglaze cobalt blue, was fired, painted again with red and green overglaze enamels, and re-fired. Because the Nabeshima Kiln imposed strict controls over pottery-making techniques and painting patterns, this beautiful dish with its delicate and meticulous workmanship was born.
