Description of works【A colorful, rich world displayed on a vase】
TAIZAN Yohei IX was an iconic ceramist of Kyoto in the first half of the Meiji era who produced many works for export. This vase is one his works and has a subtle yellow base embellished with unprecedentedly vivid colored chrysanthemums and butterflies, with white chrysanthemums in a raised slip decoration called moriage. The background is painted using pointillism in gold, almost like maki-e (decoration using gold or silver powder) on urushi lacquerware. Covering the entire object, all these adornments contribute to creating a rich and gorgeous world on a vase. Compared to Kyo (Kyoto) ware of the Edo period, the coloring is bolder and the composition of the patterns are quite decorative, to suit Western taste.
