Description of works【Made by a great craftsman respected for his natural talent】
This is a set of tall sake cups with ryoka (pinched-edged style) rims. Each piece is segmented into six “windows,” bearing a chrysanthemum or lion motif in underglaze cobalt blue. In addition, the interior is decorated with yoraku (a type of Buddhist altar fitting) on the inside, and the rims with tetsu-e (underglaze iron rim) for additional color.
The artist, KAWAMOTO Hansuke IV (unknown–1857 CE), was an artisan who mainly produced underglaze cobalt blue porcelains at a studio that had been operating for six generations in the Go District in Seto. During the Tempo era (1830–1844 CE), he was under the patronage of the Owari Tokugawa family.
