Description of works【A work by Seto’s master ceramist, Shuntai】
This large dish was made by Shuntai (1802–1877 CE), who was born into Seto’s Nihei family of Akazu, which served the feudal lord of the area. Shuntai also worked at the Ofuke Kiln, located inside the grounds of Nagoya Castle. He was known as a master craftsman of the Edo period, excelling in a variety of ceramic styles, including Oribe, Shino, Hagi, Kenzan, and Mishima.
This large foliate dish was made by molding a slab of clay, which is imprinted with the weave of the fabric used between the clay and the mold. Underneath are three feet made of coiled clay. The veins of the leaf are engraved onto the interior, and areas not glazed with ryokuyu (green glaze) are decorated with kikko-hishitsunagi (linked tortoiseshell and diamond-shaped patterns), bellflowers, a bridge handrail, and plum blossoms in tetsu-e (underglaze iron).
