Description of works【An early Seto underglaze cobalt blue porcelain】
It is well-known that Seto began producing porcelains in underglaze cobalt blue only after a local potter, KATO Tamikichi, traveled to Amakusa in Kyushu to learn from the Arita kilns their techniques for firing porcelains. This piece, attributed to Tamikichi, is an example of what porcelain in Seto’s early years was like, with clay that failed to achieve pure white and dull gosu (cobalt blue pigment).
This vase is covered with a design of landscapes, a pavilion, adults, children, and waterfalls — all in minute detail.
