Description of works【The emergence of Seto porcelain】
This is a set of uniquely-shapedmukozuke(small dish). Polygonal cylinders with wide bases, the exterior sides and interior rims are decorated withnejiri shonzuimon(auspicious patterns drawn in slanted bands).
The interior has an inscription reading “Goro Taiho Goshonzui reproduced by Tamikichi of Seto.” Goro Taiho Goshonzui refers to underglaze cobalt blue porcelains produced at the end of the Ming dynasty in China. This set is one of many examples bearing such inscriptions, indicating the Japanese ceramists’ pride in producing works rivaling in quality those of their Chinese counterparts.
