Description of works【Varied painting techniques used to achieve enriched expression】
This bowl was made in the late 16th century in present-day Gifu Prefecture. It is an E-Shino, which was the first Japanese ceramic ware to be decorated with brush painting. The normal circular shape was modified into a square with nadeyoho (rounded corners), with its widened rim contoured in ryoka style (rim with pinched edges). A fruit tree with large leaves is placed in the center, surrounded by six pairs of birds, and chrysanthemum and karakusa (arabesque) patterns add vibrant charm to the bowl. The veins of the leaves are produced by scraping off the tetsu-e (underglaze iron).
